Advanced EMT Training

The Advanced EMT (AEMT) has training in specific aspects of advanced life support (ALS) as found in the NHTSA 2009 National EMS Education Standards including intravenous (IV) therapy, certain types of advanced airway management and assisting with administration of certain medications. This course is approved by the National Registry of EMTs and the states of Mississippi and Louisiana. The student must also complete hospital clinical and ambulance field patient care in which student must meet set numbers of clinical skills objectives such as medication administrations, successful IV starts, ventilations, assessment and treatment plans for patients with various medical conditions, assessments on pediatric, adult and geriatric patients, and documented patient transports as the “team leader”. In addition to meeting psychomotor and cognitive requirements, students will also be graded (as pass/ fail) on the “affective” learning domain as it relates to student’s timeliness, preparedness, and behavior. After successful course completion, students will be allowed to participate in the National Registry psychomotor and written exams. 192 Hours.

Prerequisites:

In order for a participant to be accepted in this specialized course he/she must fulfill the following:

  1. Must hold current National Registry EMT.
  2. Must provide immunization status with documentation of Hepatitis B immunization or declination form stating refusal to take immunization
  3. T.B. testing within last 6 months.
  4. Free from communicable disease.
  5. Must complete a federal background check performed by state police.
  6. May not have physical or psychological dependence to any substance other than those recognized as therapeutic treatments for valid medical conditions for which they are currently under the care of a physician.
  7. Proof of health insurance is required
